The Icon blessed by Pope Pius XII returns to the Vatican

Collector Roberto Gagliardi has decided to return the sacred Icon presented as a gift to Princess Margaret during her official visit to the Vatican in 1958.
This Icon has an exceptional historical and religious relevance as it was given to a high member of the British Royal Family after centuries of discord and distance between Rome and the Church of England.
During the visit to the Vatican, Princess Margaret was also invited by the President of the Italian Republic to lunch in her honour with the participation of the highest political, private, military and international diplomatic representatives.
The return of this beautiful Icon made by Buccellati decorated with Rubies will be the symbol of the historic visit by the Princess to the Pope the bridge between Catholicism and Protestantism.
The icon was acquired with the help and collaboration of Roberto Gagliardi in the same auction in which the portrait of Princess Margaret painted by Pietro Annigoni was sold for approx £800,000 - rumour has it that the portrait was purchased by HRH Queen Elizabeth II in memory of her sister who was upset by the decision of Princess Margaret's children to sell her belongings.
